Artist Biography

Ted Bobier was born on May 28,1964 Manila, Philippines. His father was an engineer and his mother was a businesswoman. He showed his inclination in art at a very young age. At the age of four he started to draw and received his “Best in Art” award during his elementary period. He took up engineering at Lyceum of the Philippines just to follow the footstep of his father. But soon realized that art is a compelling force in his life. His father hired a private instructor when he was in high school. a Master of Fine Arts from the University of the Philippines, to train him as an artist.

In 1994 , he decided to take up Fine Arts at Yuri Arts School and continued his search for his artistic expression and studied under Sammy Ringor, one of the leading portrait artist during that time. He has trained with him for about two years. And soon decided to migrate to Canada on March 17,2003. In Winnipeg, he became a Board member of CARFAC, (Canadian Artist Representation) and currently represented by WAYNE ARTHUR GALLERY. He also took several art courses at Forum Art Institute, Winnipeg Art Gallery (WAG) and took several workshop with several leading artist here in Winnipeg.

Ted Bobier is still in the process of incubation. Looking forward to his artistic maturity and style. Willing to bring his artistic expression into the next level. Hoping to lead his viewers to experience a certain kind of euphoria in its deepest level , which is beyond their comprehension. For now he made Winnipeg his home, with his wife Amy, together with his two daughters Hannah and Kaeziah .

Artist statement
My work often defies the Interpretative possibilities of the language. Attention is focused on the larger implication of the work rather than its meaning. At first, there was a fear of diving into it -- succumbing to the lure of abstraction without fully understanding its ramification. My transition from realism to abstraction is painfully slow. I often struggle with the implications of leaving behind the illusions of the real world in favour of reaching a purity of form and colour which eventually leads to my own creations.

TED BOBIER

An Artist Determined to Make it in Canada --

Ted Bobier is a Filipino artist determined to make his mark among Canadian artists. In the Philippines, he has been honing his craft as a landscape artist since 1993 and. had participated in painting exhibits at the Paper Moon Restaurant in Bel Air and at Le Souffle Rest in Greenbelt. One of his commissioned paintings now hangs at the Isuzu Highlander offices in Manila. Desirous to continue his craft here, upon arrival in Winnipeg about four years ago, he wasted no time looking for colleagues who can assist him navigate the Canadian system. Unfettered by his first unfavorable experiences, the budding artist persisted until he found the right connections.

Ted is currently the only Filipino Board member of the Canadian Artists’ Representation/Le Front des Artistes Canadiens (CARFAC), Manitoba Chapter, a non-profit art organization in Manitoba working with various artists. A part of the CARFAC, Canada, it welcomes all established and emerging visual artists who are working in all modes of artistic expression. Ted joined this organization three years ago after a counselor from the Manitoba Apprenticeship Program referred him to CARFAC.

Some of Ted’s works were exhibited this month at a fundraising event sponsored by CARFAC. Ted received the nod from famous artists like Megan Vun Wong and Ludolf Grolle. Megan Vun Wong, a renowned artist with a Master of Fine Arts from York University, spoke highly of Ted and encouraged him to “keep up the good work.” Ludolf Grolle, a world renowned artist educated in the United Kingdom with degrees in Art, Literature and Philosophy and taught art in Paris and Amsterdam but now living in Winnipeg spoke about Ted’s works. He said, “you can make money in this business with your kind of paintings.” Ted believes that having mentors like Ludolf and Megan is not only being lucky but blessed. “I learned a lot from them”, he mused.

Ted credits Ludolf for steering him from being a landscape (realism) to an abstract painter. “My transition from realism to abstraction is painfully slow, I often struggled with the implications of leaving behind the illusions of real world in favour of reaching a purity of forms and colours which eventually leads to my own creation,” he explained
