Artist Statement
I CREATE to delight, disturb, explode, implode, scream without making a sound, create panic, laughter, distain, awe and dialogue.
I am a multi skilled artist and have a fairly large body of work that is an exciting mix of mediums and subject matter prepared for exhibition.
I live and work in the rural area of Gimli and am self taught for the most part. The primary mediums I use are oil, acrylic and clay but will use other mediums such as fiber, batik, pastel, collage, graphite, multi media etc. I have many instantaneous ideas and visions and while my main interests lie in creating challenging and unorthodox portraits, some humorous, some more serious, pushing boundaries and taking risks is what I do. Doing art, for art sake, for my sake, for heaven sake.
At present I have been working at making the simple complicated and the complicated simple, challenging the viewer and myself. Making a strong obvious statement using humor or creating a work that comes from my own secret world gives me pleasure. My preferences tend to lean toward light surrealism, fantasy and exaggerated, almost possible real life situations. I am inspired by past and present experiences of my favorite others as well as my own. Words, dreams (both day and night), political events, human rights issues, feminist issues, family, bricks, colors, all can inspire new ideas for a new creation. I have been working professionally for the past 5 - years. There will always be the unexpected at my studio or art show. |
