Juror Comments:
When Earl Graham painted "Bailey", he obviously knew his subject well and conveyed some of his affection for the intelligent little dog to us in his painting. I especially like the pose, so typical of a westie, with the shadow muting one side of the face so that the viewer's attention is focused on that one bright, very well-rendered eye. This is a case where an animal portrait can really say alot - not just about how the animal looks, but also about the personality of the subject. I also like the coat texture and the limited color palette. The rocks the dog is standing on look a little contrived and maybe could be softened a bit to make them less of a distraction. This is a very good dog portrait, one that looks right back at you!
